Who are they looking for?
The Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade are seeking existing ongoing APS employees who are interested in a temporary or permanent transfer to the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.
You will be practical and results-oriented, with an ability to work under pressure – often in high-pressure and fast-paced environments – and to meet tight deadlines. You will be flexible, resilient, and adaptable, and bring a high level of cultural sensitivity.
The department uses the register to access appropriately skilled and experienced individuals to deliver high quality international development assistance, develop and implement foreign and trade policy, negotiate international agreements, provide professional corporate management support and deliver high quality consular and passport services to Australian travelers.
Duties and Responsibilities
Only flexible, adaptable, professional staff who can contribute to the department’s work across a broad agenda in support of Australia’s international engagement are needed. Individuals with expertise across all areas of the department’s work, both policy and corporate management shall be prioritised.
In the online application form, applicants are expected to express their interests in roles from APS Level 4 to Executive Level 2, the skillsets most closely aligned with their individual experiences and whether they are seeking a permanent or temporary transfer. Positions may be full-time or part-time depending on business needs and requirements.
Your application will remain valid until 30 June 2025. Applications are not carried over after this time. If you previously applied for the 2024-25 APS Permanent and Temporary Transfer Register (S26) you will be required to submit a new application.

Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must be an ongoing (permanent) APS employee and where an offer for Temporary Section 26 is made, your home agency will be required to agree to release you.
The department requires the successful applicants to obtain and maintain a Negative Vetting 2 level clearance security clearance (or Baseline, Negative Vetting Level 1 or Positive Vetting (PV) where positions are designated as such in the DFAT Security Framework or PV organisational chart, respectively). Loss of a security clearance at any time may lead to termination of employment. Employment with the department can, however, commence on lower-level clearances or without a clearance, in some circumstances, and the department will work with you to facilitate this if you are successful.
Depending on the role into which you are placed, you may also be required to obtain and maintain a Working with Vulnerable People/Children registration (or equivalent).
